DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Are you an experienced shooter who wants to teach others about basic marksmanship and firearm safety? This is the course for you! Instructor candidates will learn to develop\, organize\, and teach a basic defense-oriented pistol curriculum in the paradigm of “gateway instruction” developed by Citizens Safety Academy.[/vc_column_text][vc_tta_accordion style=”modern” shape=”square” color=”mulled-wine” c_icon=”chevron” active_section=”9″ no_fill=”true” collapsible_all=”true”][vc_tta_section title=”Course Details” tab_id=”section-course-details”][vc_column_text]\nThis course teaches experienced shooters how to design\, organize\, and conduct a gateway (entry-level) pistol shooting course.  \nThere are many instructor certification courses available\, but most suffer from at least one of three common shortcomings. First\, they often spend too much time on shooting and not enough time on teaching how to teach. Second\, they often focus on teaching intermediate-level shooters without enough attention paid to the nuances of managing a class full of brand-new\, first-time shooters. Third\, many instructor courses tend to ignore the cultural and demographic dynamics of today’s market of firearms trainees.  \nWith the recent explosion of gun purchases by urbanites\, millennials\, trauma victims\, and others who don’t fit the traditional stereotypes of gun ownership\, firearms trainers must adapt to the rapidly-evolving 21st Century market. CSA developed what we call the “gateway” instructional model in an effort to fill those gaps in the training community.  \nInstructor candidates will learn and demonstrate organizational and teaching skills via participation in practical exercises during the course (including leading a line of live-fire shooters through a course of fire). Candidates will also have to pass an instructor certification examination and a shooting qualification course of fire. We have found that many “beginner” classes on the market are often weighed down by assumptions and misperceptions about what new shooters typically bring with them. These classes often take for granted that every student has the same opinion about guns\, everyone has the same understanding of gun safety\, and everyone generally understands how guns work and what they’re used for. But that’s often not the case. \nAt CSA\, we take a different approach. Gateway instruction levels the playing field by allowing all students to enter the firearms training world without any pressure to know more than they know\, or to be someone they aren’t. One of the many benefits of this teaching technique (and the reason we call it “gateway instruction”) is that it greatly increases the chances of students investing in more training and becoming members of the training community\, rather than just visitors or sightseers. We hope to be an “on-ramp” for those who might otherwise see themselves as outsiders to the gun world.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Topics Covered” tab_id=”1628349014244-f4941925-2c89″][vc_column_text]Every class is a little different\, so we often have to make adjustments based on time and facility constraints; but our standard Gateway Instructor curriculum includes the following: \n\nAdult learning theory\nEffective communication skills / public speaking\nDepoliticizing instruction\, content\, and facilities\nDesigning and using effective training aids\nConnecting with inexperienced\, fearful\, and non-traditional students\nMaking classroom lectures interactive and engaging\nEffective use of multi-media in the modern classroom\nConcepts from the pivotal text\, “Telling Ain’t Training\,” by Keeps and Stolovitch\nClassroom management\nRange management\nTeaching basic principles of lawful defensive force\nManaging students with past trauma or emotional triggers\nEffective assessment / written examination design\nHow to control and command a firing line\nThe “Less is More” principle\nEffective range commands\nStudent-centric range exercises\nDifferentiating between skill drills and performance drills\nManaging students with physical limitations or disabilities\nTeaching both left- and right-handed students\nManaging firing lines with revolvers and semi-autos of different action types\nEffective use of assistant instructors\nSafety protocols and emergency procedures\nAnd much more!\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Equipment List” tab_id=”equipment”][vc_column_text]For this class\, you’ll need: \n\nAn open  mind\nA positive attitude\nA reliable semi-automatic handgun (9mm or larger)\nRoughly 200 rounds of ammunition (ammo usage will depend on how many times we need to shoot the 25-round qualification course and how much time we have to shoot skill drills).\nEye and ear protection\nComfortable clothing appropriate for shooting (indoor ranges can be cold)\, brimmed hat/cap\, trimmed fingernails (no high-heeled or open-toed shoes or low cut blouses) snacks and water. If at an outdoor range\, weather appropriate attire\, bug spray\, snacks and water\nNotebook and pens or an electronic device (laptop/tablet) for note taking\n\nNote that you will NOT need a holster for the range exercises. We’ll send an email to all students within a week of class with more details on what to bring and what to expect. \nNote on Ammo:\nWe are mindful of the current ammunition shortage. We will do our very best to be conservative with ammo consumption throughout this course. Expect to use no more than 300 rounds of ammunition over the course of the weekend. Defensive calibers (at least 9mm) are required for all qualification drills. Candidates will need: \n\nAn open mind and willingness to learn\nReliable handgun in a service caliber\, .38 sp/9mm or larger. With the recent explosion of gun purchases by urbanites\, millennials\, trauma victims\, and others who don’t fit the traditional stereotypes of gun ownership\, firearms trainers must adapt to the rapidly-evolving 21st Century market. With the recent explosion of gun purchases by urbanites\, millennials\, trauma victims\, others who don’t fit the traditional stereotypes of gun ownership\, firearms trainers must adapt to the rapidly-evolving 21st Century market. We have found that many “beginner” classes on the market are often weighed down by assumptions and misperceptions about what new shooters typically bring with them. These classes often take for granted that every student has the same opinion about guns\, everyone has the same understanding of gun safety\, and everyone generally understands how guns work and what their used for. But that’s often not the case. \nAt CSA\, we take a different approach. Gateway instruction levels the playing field by allowing all students to enter the firearms training world without any pressure to know more than they know\, or to be someone they aren’t. One of the many benefits of this teaching technique (and the reason we call it “gateway instruction”) is that it greatly increases the chances of students investing in more training and becoming members of the training community\, rather than just visitors or sightseers. Concealed defensive holsters are welcome (if you are legally permitted to carry concealed)\, but we will not be using holsters for the range portion of the class. Expect to use no more than 300 rounds of ammunition over the course of the weekend. Defensive calibers (at least 9mm) are required for all qualification drills. Candidates will need: \n\nAn open mind and willingness to learn\nReliable handgun in a service caliber\, .38 sp/9mm or larger. NRA CCW is a newly-developed curriculum that builds on the fundamentals taught in the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Course and puts those skills into a defensive context for private citizens who carry concealed handguns. That amounts to roughly two hours of classroom instruction and two hours of work on the range. After a review of the safety rules\, we’ll focus solely on developing safe techniques for drawing from the holster. Students should already be familiar with basic marksmanship an safe gun-handling.  \nSmall classes ensure low student-to-instructor ratios for lots of individualized attention. The course concludes with a written test and a shooting qualification drill. Being an effective assistant trainer requires more than just standing behind a row of shooters or loitering in the back of the classroom. How do you handle a nervous student? Or a student who doesn’t follow directions? Or one who is unsafe\, chatty\, inattentive\, physically compromised\, or just plain terrified? What is the assistant instructor’s role\, and how is it different from the lead instructor\, or the range safety officer\, or the one-on-one coach? In this class\, we’ll explore some useful tips\, skills\, and best practices that elevate the A.I. from just another person on the range to an indispensable part of the training team. \nNo ammunition is required for this class. All drills and exercises will be conducted in the classroom\, with dummy ammunition or blue guns used to simulate range instruction. This course is ideal for those who intend to carry a concealed handgun on their person\, outside of the home. \nThere will be some review of general marksmanship (sight alignment\, trigger control\, etc.)\, but the primary focus of NRA CCW is defensive mindset and concealed carry techniques (presentation from a holster). There is no prerequisite for this class\, but typically students should have some general familiarity with the five fundamentals of marksmanship. The course concludes with a written test and a shooting qualification drill. NRA CCW is a newly-developed curriculum that builds on the fundamentals taught in the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Course and puts those skills into a defensive context for private citizens who carry concealed handguns.
