Private security work in Tennessee is governed by the Private Protective Services Licensing and Regulatory Act (Title 62\, chapter 35 of the Tennessee Code). It’s regulated by the Department of Commerce and Insurance\, which administers the application process. One requirement for new applicants is 16 hours of specialized training. This course satisfies the training requirement imposed by Tenn. Code Ann. § 62-35-118 (b) for applicants seeking to earn an armed security registration card.  \nAs required by law\, this is a 16-hour course that includes 4 hours of unarmed guard training and 8 hours of classroom instruction with a focus on authority\, duties and legal responsibilities of security guards/officers\, use of force laws in Tennessee\, gun safety\, and proper selection of weapons and gear. The final 4 hours are spent in live fire training on the range. \nRange training includes hands-on time with weapons to improve mindset\, marksmanship\, and manipulation skills\, as well as defensive shooting tactics\, techniques\, and procedures.  \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Eligibility” tab_id=”eligibility”][vc_column_text]\nBelow are the eligibility requirements for an armed guard license (see Tenn. Code Ann § 62-35-117). Note that a security guard who holds an armed guard license may work either an armed post or an unarmed post (no need to separately obtain an unarmed guard license). \n\nMust be at least 21 years of age\nMust be a U.S. citizen or a resident alien (green card holder)\nMust have never been declared by any court to be incompetent by reason of mental defect or disease (unless you’ve since been declared competent)\nIf previously convicted of any felony or serious misdemeanor (involving violence\, firearms\, or theft)\, the applicant must have completed serving any sentence or probation at least five years prior to applying for the security guard license \nMust not be addicted to drugs or alcohol;\nMust not have any disability that prevents you for safely performing security duties; and\nMust be of good moral character.\n\nSuccessful applicants must meet the training requirements and submit electronic fingerprints for processing TBI and or FBI criminal history check. This course satisfies the training requirement (see Tenn. Students will learn through a progression of freestyle and dominant hand only drills to ultimately draw\, reload\, and clear malfunctions using only their non-dominant hand. It is much more convenient to learn how to do this on the range than to have to figure it out under incoming fire. \nPrerequisites: \nThis is not a course for the first time student. Enrollment is limited to students who have already completed training from a recognized instructor that included drawing\, reloading\, etc\, under time constraints. Graduates from a law enforcement academy\, IDPA Sharpshooter class or USPSA C-class shooters or higher will also be accepted. Other students may be admitted with approval from the instructor. Holsters that require the use of the trigger finger to disengage a retention device\, such as a Blackhawk Serpa\, are strongly discouraged. At least three magazines and 300 rounds of ammo are needed. Shooters need eye and ear protection as well as a hat with a brim. SUMMARY:NRA CCW Instructor Certification Course (Memphis)
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The goal of the NRA CCW Instructor Certification Course is to equip firearms trainers with the knowledge\, skills\, and attitude necessary to teach others how to safely and responsibly carry a concealed pistol for personal protection. NRA CCW is a newly-developed curriculum that builds on the fundamentals taught in the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Course and puts those skills into a defensive context for private citizens who carry concealed handguns. The CCW Instructor Certification Course is 16 hours in length (over two days)\, with a significant portion of the class spent on the range.[/vc_column_text][vc_tta_accordion style=”modern” shape=”square” color=”mulled-wine” c_icon=”chevron” active_section=”9″ no_fill=”true” collapsible_all=”true”][vc_tta_section title=”Course Details” tab_id=”section-course-details”][vc_column_text]This course teaches firearms trainers how to deliver the NRA’s CCW lesson plans. The lesson plans include the following topics (which instructor candidates will learn to teach): \n\nReview from NRA Basic Pistol or TN Handgun Carry Permit class\n\ngun safety rules\nproper operation of revolvers and semi-automatic pistols\nFundamentals of marksmanship\nammunition knowledge and selection\n\n\nholster selection\ndifferent carry modes\ndrawing from a holster (open and concealed)\ndefensive mindset\ndefensive accuracy and flash sight picture\nemergency reloading\nmalfunction clearances\none-handed shooting\nshooting from moderate distances (10-15 yards)\nshooting with a timer\nand much more!\n\nThe course concludes with a written instructor candidate exam and a shooting qualification drill. Since all CCW instructor candidates are required to already be certified as NRA Basic Pistol instructors\, we assume most candidates will have already met the BIT requirement. However\, if you would like to add the CCW instructor rating and you need to renew your BIT credentials\, please let us know. This course is ideal for those who intend to carry a concealed handgun on their person\, outside of the home. \nThere will be some review of general marksmanship (sight alignment\, trigger control\, etc.)\, but the primary focus of NRA CCW is defensive mindset and concealed carry techniques (presentation from a holster). There is no prerequisite for this class\, but typically students should have some general familiarity with the five fundamentals of marksmanship. To find out for sure\, contact the proper officials in your state to verify whether the CCW course will satisfy that state’s training requirement. \nTennessee has designed its own training course specifically for handgun carry permit applicants\, so the CCW course is currently not accepted as a substitute. During this part\, candidates will learn NRA policies and procedures\, basic public speaking skills\, training methodology\, use of a training team and training aids\, organizing a course\, building a budget\, and preparing to teach. Day one also includes the pre-course shooting qualification. \nDay two is Pistol Instructor training. During this portion\, candidates will be provided with the Basic Pistol lesson plans and student packets. Role playing is a major part of an instructor course. This is a firm NRA policy\, and there are no exceptions\, regardless of your occupation\, regardless of other certifications\, and regardless of how much prior training and experience you’ve had. \nIf you haven’t completed Basic Pistol\, we will be offering it at Top Gun on Thursday and Friday night before his instructor course. However\, this offering will NOT include BIT\, as most expected attendees are already NRA-certified pistol instructors.
