Handgun permit training is a great start\, but it’s very basic\, focusing mostly on relevant statutes and safe handgun operation. It wasn’t created to teach you how to carry a handgun in public or use one to defend yourself from violent attack. Defending yourself with a handgun demands a level of skill. Developing the required skill takes more than one class\, it is a process that involves time\, instruction\, and structured practice. \nFor those who want to gain confidence and competence with their handgun we have the “After the Permit” series of courses\, ATP-1 and ATP-2.[/vc_column_text][vc_tta_accordion style=”modern” shape=”square” color=”mulled-wine” c_icon=”chevron” active_section=”9″ no_fill=”true” collapsible_all=”true”][vc_tta_section title=”Course Details” tab_id=”section-course-details”][vc_column_text]ATP-1 is a half-day course that continues where the TN Handgun Permit class ends. This version is a total of four hours long and includes only the modules on safety\, holster basics\, and live-fire. That amounts to roughly two hours of classroom instruction and two hours of work on the range. After a review of the safety rules\, we’ll focus solely on developing safe techniques for drawing from the holster. Students should already be familiar with basic marksmanship an safe gun-handling.  \nSmall classes ensure low student-to-instructor ratios for lots of individualized attention. The course concludes with a written test and a shooting qualification drill. Enrollment is closed to the general public. Those who were pre-selected by the NAAGA leadership to attend this course will be provided with an access code to reveal the registration form. All other details of the course will be sent directly to the registrants by email. We look forward to training with you![/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Equipment List” tab_id=”equipment”][vc_column_text]Instructor candidates will need a quality defensive handgun (not a competition gun or a hunting gun). Concealed defensive holsters are welcome (if you are legally permitted to carry concealed)\, but we will not be using holsters for the range portion of the class. Expect to use no more than 300 rounds of ammunition over the course of the weekend. Defensive calibers (at least 9mm) are required for all qualification drills. Candidates will need: \n\nAn open mind and willingness to learn\nReliable handgun in a service caliber\, .38 sp/9mm or larger. (You can bring a .22 caliber pistol for the drills in the basic class to save money\, but the qualification courses must be shot using service caliber ammunition).\n200 rounds of ammo in a service caliber for the instructor course\nAnother 100 rounds for the basic class (for a total of 300\, see above)\nEye and hearing protection (preferably electronic hearing protection)\nNotebook and pens or an electronic device (laptop/pad) for note taking\nComfortable clothing appropriate for shooting (indoor ranges can be cold)\, brimmed hat/cap\, trimmed fingernails. Or a student who doesn’t follow directions? Or one who is unsafe\, chatty\, inattentive\, physically compromised\, or just plain terrified? What is the assistant instructor’s role\, and how is it different from the lead instructor\, or the range safety officer\, or the one-on-one coach? In this class\, we’ll explore some useful tips\, skills\, and best practices that elevate the A.I. from just another person on the range to an indispensable part of the training team. \nNo ammunition is required for this class. All drills and exercises will be conducted in the classroom\, with dummy ammunition or blue guns used to simulate range instruction. Enrollment is closed to the general public. Those who were pre-selected by the NAAGA leadership to attend this course will be provided with an access code to reveal the registration form. All other details of the course will be sent directly to the registrants by email. We look forward to training with you![/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Equipment List” tab_id=”equipment”][vc_column_text]Instructor candidates will need a quality defensive handgun (not a competition gun or a hunting gun). Concealed defensive holsters are welcome (if you are legally permitted to carry concealed)\, but we will not be using holsters for the range portion of the class. Expect to use no more than 300 rounds of ammunition over the course of the weekend. Defensive calibers (at least 9mm) are required for all qualification drills. Candidates will need: \n\nAn open mind and willingness to learn\nReliable handgun in a service caliber\, .38 sp/9mm or larger. (You can bring a .22 caliber pistol for the drills in the basic class to save money\, but the qualification courses must be shot using service caliber ammunition).\n200 rounds of ammo in a service caliber for the instructor course\nAnother 100 rounds for the basic class (for a total of 300\, see above)\nEye and hearing protection (preferably electronic hearing protection)\nNotebook and pens or an electronic device (laptop/pad) for note taking\nComfortable clothing appropriate for shooting (indoor ranges can be cold)\, brimmed hat/cap\, trimmed fingernails. Equally important but less often recognized is the role of the assistant instructor. Being an effective assistant trainer requires more than just standing behind a row of shooters or loitering in the back of the classroom. How do you handle a nervous student? Or a student who doesn’t follow directions? Or one who is unsafe\, chatty\, inattentive\, physically compromised\, or just plain terrified? What is the assistant instructor’s role\, and how is it different from the lead instructor\, or the range safety officer\, or the one-on-one coach? In this class\, we’ll explore some useful tips\, skills\, and best practices that elevate the A.I. from just another person on the range to an indispensable part of the training team. \nNo ammunition is required for this class. All drills and exercises will be conducted in the classroom\, with dummy ammunition or blue guns used to simulate range instruction. This course is ideal for those who intend to carry a concealed handgun on their person\, outside of the home. \nThere will be some review of general marksmanship (sight alignment\, trigger control\, etc.)\, but the primary focus of NRA CCW is defensive mindset and concealed carry techniques (presentation from a holster). There is no prerequisite for this class\, but typically students will have some general familiarity with the five fundamentals of marksmanship. However\, when we have CCW students who are brand new to shooting\, we will adjust the curriculum accordingly.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Can I use this class to get my carry permit?” tab_id=”ccw-class-for-carry-permit”][vc_column_text]Every state has its own rules for handgun carry permit issuance. The NRA CCW class is designed to meet most states’ training requirements\, and many states do accept it\, but please do not make any assumptions. To find out for sure\, contact the proper officials in your state to verify whether the CCW course will satisfy that state’s training requirement. \nTennessee has designed its own training course specifically for Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit applicants\, and this course is currently not accepted as a substitute. However\, Tennessee now has a new permit called the Concealed Handgun Carry permit\, and the NRA CCW class DOES satisfy the training requirement for Tennessee’s Concealed Handgun Carry permit.
