Handgun permit training is a great start\, but it’s very basic\, focusing mostly on relevant statutes and safe handgun operation. It wasn’t created to teach you how to carry a handgun in public or use one to defend yourself from violent attack. Those skills can only come with time\, instruction\, and structured practice over more than one class. Handgun permit training is a great start\, but it’s very basic\, focusing mostly on relevant statutes and safe handgun operation. It wasn’t created to teach you how to carry a handgun in public or use one to defend yourself from violent attack. Defending yourself with a handgun demands a level of skill. This is the eight-hour safety course required by the State of Tennessee to obtain a handgun carry permit (HCP). Tennessee does not require a permit to merely own a firearm (for example\, if you keep one in your home). However\, if you want to carry a firearm on your person out in public\, you’ll need a permit. There are lots of people advertising permit classes nowadays.
