Private security work in Tennessee is governed by the Private Protective Services Licensing and Regulatory Act (Title 62\, chapter 35 of the Tennessee Code). It’s regulated by the Department of Commerce and Insurance\, which administers the application process. One requirement for new applicants is 16 hours of specialized training. This course satisfies the training requirement imposed by Tenn. Code Ann. § 62-35-118 (b) for applicants seeking to earn an armed security registration card.  \nAs required by law\, this is a 16-hour course that includes 4 hours of unarmed guard training and 8 hours of classroom instruction with a focus on authority\, duties and legal responsibilities of security guards/officers\, use of force laws in Tennessee\, gun safety\, and proper selection of weapons and gear. The final 4 hours are spent in live fire training on the range. \nRange training includes hands-on time with weapons to improve mindset\, marksmanship\, and manipulation skills\, as well as defensive shooting tactics\, techniques\, and procedures.  \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Eligibility” tab_id=”eligibility”][vc_column_text]\nBelow are the eligibility requirements for an armed guard license (see Tenn. Code Ann § 62-35-117). Note that a security guard who holds an armed guard license may work either an armed post or an unarmed post (no need to separately obtain an unarmed guard license). \n\nMust be at least 21 years of age\nMust be a U.S. citizen or a resident alien (green card holder)\nMust have never been declared by any court to be incompetent by reason of mental defect or disease (unless you’ve since been declared competent)\nIf previously convicted of any felony or serious misdemeanor (involving violence\, firearms\, or theft)\, the applicant must have completed serving any sentence or probation at least five years prior to applying for the security guard license \nMust not be addicted to drugs or alcohol;\nMust not have any disability that prevents you for safely performing security duties; and\nMust be of good moral character.\n\nSuccessful applicants must meet the training requirements and submit electronic fingerprints for processing TBI and or FBI criminal history check. This course satisfies the training requirement (see Tenn. Private security work in Tennessee is governed by the Private Protective Services Licensing and Regulatory Act (Title 62\, chapter 35 of the Tennessee Code). It’s regulated by the Department of Commerce and Insurance\, which administers the application process. One requirement for new applicants is 16 hours of specialized training. This course satisfies the training requirement imposed by Tenn. Code Ann. § 62-35-118 (b) for applicants seeking to earn an armed security registration card.  \nAs required by law\, this is a 16-hour course that includes 4 hours of unarmed guard training and 8 hours of classroom instruction with a focus on authority\, duties and legal responsibilities of security guards/officers\, use of force laws in Tennessee\, gun safety\, and proper selection of weapons and gear. The final 4 hours are spent in live fire training on the range. \nRange training includes hands-on time with weapons to improve mindset\, marksmanship\, and manipulation skills\, as well as defensive shooting tactics\, techniques\, and procedures.  \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Eligibility” tab_id=”eligibility”][vc_column_text]\nBelow are the eligibility requirements for an armed guard license (see Tenn. Note that a security guard who holds an armed guard license may work either an armed post or an unarmed post (no need to separately obtain an unarmed guard license). \n\nMust be at least 21 years of age\nMust be a U.S. citizen or a resident alien (green card holder)\nMust have never been declared by any court to be incompetent by reason of mental defect or disease (unless you’ve since been declared competent)\nIf previously convicted of any felony or serious misdemeanor (involving violence\, firearms\, or theft)\, the applicant must have completed serving any sentence or probation at least five years prior to applying for the security guard license \nMust not be addicted to drugs or alcohol;\nMust not have any disability that prevents you for safely performing security duties; and\nMust be of good moral character.\n\nSuccessful applicants must meet the training requirements and submit electronic fingerprints for processing TBI and or FBI criminal history check. The goal is to develop the knowledge\, skills\, and mindset necessary to dominate and end an inescapable deadly assault\, and then successfully defend those actions in court.  \nTopics include: \n\nMental awareness and techniques for gaining advantage in life-threatening confrontations\nProper defensive mindset and personal tactics \nConcealing a pistol properly and clothing considerations\nEffective gun handling techniques designed to work under stress\nRapid presentation from concealed carry during an attack (and safely concealing it)\nHigh speed accuracy at close ranges and precision shooting at mid ranges\nRapidly and reliably fixing pistol malfunctions and reloading techniques \nShooting effectively with one hand\nShooting effectively with a cognitive load\nTactical anatomy \nProper skill development practices\n\nClass prerequisites: Completion of a state handgun carry permit class or other comparative pistol shooting class. We recommend full or compact sized guns for this class. Sub-compact guns are much harder to shoot all day. A second gun like the first one is a good idea in case the first one breaks.\nA quality strong side hip or appendix holster – either form fitted leather or kydex\, the holster must completely cover the trigger guard\, allow a full firing grip with the gun in the holster and remain open while the gun is drawn. PLEASE NO flimsy nylon or cloth holsters.\nA quality belt\, purposely designed to securely attach the holster to the belt and support the weight of a fully loaded pistol.\nAbout 550-600 rounds of quality training ammunition. If you can bring more do so\nAT LEAST 3 magazines or speed loaders with appropriate belt pouches for the spare magazines. The more magazines you bring\, the better.\nClothing appropriate for concealing a firearm (vest\, jacket\, windbreaker\, over-shirt\, polo shirt\, etc.). Holsters must be worn concealed. \nEye protection and hearing protection (we recommend electronic) and we recommend a ball cap or brimmed hat to keep brass from going behind your eye protection. \nComfortable shoes and clothing appropriate for the weather.\nRain gear (we train rain or shine)\, bug repellant\, and sun screen if necessary.\nA cooler with soft drinks\, water\, snacks and lunch will be needed\, for lunch on site. Private security work in Tennessee is governed by the Private Protective Services Licensing and Regulatory Act (Title 62\, chapter 35 of the Tennessee Code). It’s regulated by the Department of Commerce and Insurance\, which administers the application process. One requirement for new applicants is 16 hours of specialized training. Code Ann. § 62-35-118 (b) for applicants seeking to earn an armed security registration card.  \nAs required by law\, this is a 16-hour course that includes 4 hours of unarmed guard training and 8 hours of classroom instruction with a focus on authority\, duties and legal responsibilities of security guards/officers\, use of force laws in Tennessee\, gun safety\, and proper selection of weapons and gear. First\, they often spend too much time on shooting and not enough time on teaching how to teach. Second\, they often focus on teaching intermediate-level shooters without enough attention paid to the nuances of managing a class full of brand-new\, first-time shooters. Third\, many instructor courses tend to ignore the cultural and demographic dynamics of today’s market of firearms trainees.  \nWith the recent explosion of gun purchases by urbanites\, millennials\, trauma victims\, and others who don’t fit the traditional stereotypes of gun ownership\, firearms trainers must adapt to the rapidly-evolving 21st Century market. CSA developed what we call the “gateway” instructional model in an effort to fill those gaps in the training community.  \nInstructor candidates will learn and demonstrate organizational and teaching skills via participation in practical exercises during the course (including leading a line of live-fire shooters through a course of fire). Candidates will also have to pass an instructor certification examination and a shooting qualification course of fire. These classes often take for granted that every student has the same opinion about guns\, everyone has the same understanding of gun safety\, and everyone generally understands how guns work and what they’re used for. But that’s often not the case. \nAt CSA\, we take a different approach. Gateway instruction levels the playing field by allowing all students to enter the firearms training world without any pressure to know more than they know\, or to be someone they aren’t. Students should already have enough training and experience to safely draw from a holster and be aware of muzzle direction/trigger finger. \nA safe and reliable semi auto pistol\, making sure it’s cleaned and lubricated ahead of time is a smart move\, if you are using an optic please make sure you have fresh or spare batteries \nStudents may work from concealment or from open carry/duty belt as they choose. \nA safe holster. This can be inside or outside the waistband. However the holster MUST allow reholstering repeatedly through the course\, so soft leather or hybrid holsters (such as the popular Crossbreed) holsters that collapse are unsafe and unsuitable for the class. \nSerpa holsters (and other such holsters that use a trigger finger to release the retention mechanism) are not allowed unless the student is a law enforcement officer using an issued duty style Serpa holster AND is required by agency policy to use this holster. \nClear eye protection (this is an indoor range) and hearing protection \nAt least three magazines for double stack pistols\, six for single stack pistols such as 1911s\, magazine pouch or pouches to allow at least one magazine to be reloaded quickly during specific drills (but two is better) \n500 rounds of quality ammunition (this is not the time to save money and try out your Uncle Cheech’s reloaded garlic soaked heat seekers in order to save money\, unreliable ammo will leave you both consistently behind and unhappy[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Guest Instructor Chuck Haggard” tab_id=”chuck-haggard”][vc_column_text]Chuck Haggard has been active in private defensive training throughout his long career in urban law enforcement. This is the eight-hour safety course required by the State of Tennessee to obtain a Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit (EHCP). Tennessee does not require a permit to merely own a firearm (for example\, if you keep one in your home). However\, if you want to carry a firearm on your person out in public\, you’ll need a permit. There are lots of people advertising permit classes nowadays.
