Due to an increase in active shooter incidents and the swiftness with which they unfold, we must now prepare ourselves, our co-workers, families and communities. This course will focus on how to be prepared and gain the skills needed to prevent, recognize and rapidly respond during an active shooter incident. This course will provide details on what behaviors to look for and the proper steps to prevent an active shooter incident. You will also learn how to make educated life-saving decisions regarding which actions to take during an active shooter incident.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
- The proper modes of response during an active shooter incident
- Gain better understanding of Active Shooter incidents
- Know the definition of an Active Shooter
- Gain understanding how these events affect businesses, schools and places of worship
- Get better at recognizing potential workplace violence indicators
- Learn how to respond when law enforcement arrives
- Describe actions to take to prevent and prepare for potential active shooter incidents
Class prerequisites: Completion of a state handgun carry permit class or other comparative pistol shooting class. You should also have some experience safely handling a pistol. Students who complete the course will receive a completion certificate.
What you will need to take the course:
- A quality pistol recommend minimum of 9mm or .38 Special. We recommend full or medium sized guns for this class. Sub-compact guns are much harder to shoot.
- 200 rounds of quality training ammunition.
- AT LEAST 2 magazines or speed loaders, 3 magazines is better.
- Eye protection and hearing protection (we recommend electronic) and we recommend a ball cap or brimmed hat to keep brass from going behind your eye protection.
- Comfortable shoes and clothing appropriate for the weather or range work.
- A cooler with soft drinks, water, snacks and lunch will be needed, for lunch on site. We will not be leaving the range for lunch.

This course fulfills TN Public Acts Chapter 367 (2023) that requires active shooter training for every licensed armed security guard who provides security or patrol services in a public school, public charter school, private school, or church-related school.
