Building Your Firearms Course (Part 2)

September 9, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm CDT

$30

Are you a firearms trainer? Great! You probably know a lot about marksmanship. But how much do you know about instructional design?

Citizens Safety Academy is proud to present this three-part webinar series for firearms instructors who are looking to be more strategic and effective in how they design, build, and market their training courses. Register for one, two, or all three webinars to gain useful insight on the course building process from start to finish. Part 2 is a deeper dive into outlining, drafting lesson plans, and selecting content for your course.

BYFC Part 1:
Instructional Design for Firearms Trainers

  • Sunday, September 5, 2021
  • Starts at 7pm CT (8pm ET; 5pm PT) – Run time is 2 hours
  • $30 stand-alone (or included in the 3-part series for $75)

How do you create a firearms course? Do you assemble your favorite drills and run students through them? Do you cover all the topics you enjoyed most in your own training career? The answer is… it depends. Here’s what you CANNOT do: you can’t wing it. Instructional design is just that – every aspect is carefully, strategically, thoughtfully devised to meet specific, pre-determined goals for pre-determined markets. In this webinar, we’ll briefly discuss the ADDIE model, Bloom’s Taxonomy, the Kirkpatrick model, and how they all can help increase our teaching effectiveness.

BYFC Part 2:
Outlines, Lesson Plans, and Content Selection

  • Thursday, September 9, 2021
  • Starts at 7pm CT (8pm ET; 5pm PT) – Run time is 2 hours
  • $30 stand-alone (or included in the 3-part series for $75)

Now that you’ve identified your target market and general course goals, let’s build a skeleton and start putting meat on those bones. A cohesive course is more than a patchwork of unconnected modules. There must be realistic benchmarks, logical progression, and objective assessment. In this second lesson of our three-part webinar series, we’ll practice building the framework for a model firearms course; we’ll document that framework with a basic lesson plan; and we’ll discuss ways to identify which course material should be scraped and what should be emphasized.

BYFC Part 3:
Reaching Your Target Market

  • Sunday, September 12, 2021
  • Starts at 7pm CT (8pm ET; 5pm PT) – Run time is 2 hours
  • $30 stand-alone (or included in the 3-part series for $75)

If you build it, will they come? Many firearms trainers know the frustration of designing a brand-new course only to have no one sign up. But course enrollment depends on several factors — some of which might not be obvious. This last segment of our instructional design series will focus on how training courses are packaged, publicized, and presented. Are you attracting the right students? Are you inadvertently giving them reasons to hesitate? We communicate with potential students in countless ways, from course descriptions to registration processes to Google reviews. Are you sending the right message?
