NRA Basic Rifle

September 25, 2020 @ 8:00 am - 6:00 pm CDT

$100.00

The NRA Basic Rifle course is designed to teach the knowledge, skills, and attitude required to own and use rifles and carbines safely, ethically, and responsibly. The course includes interactive classroom discussion, dry-fire practice drills, and live-fire exercises on the range. This is not a defensive course or a tactics course. Instead, we’ll focus on familiarization, basic operation, marksmanship, and most of all, safety.

This is an excellent course for anyone who is new to rifles and carbines. It’s also a great course for those who are self-taught or out of formal practice, and for those who hope to earn NRA instructor credentials. Course topics will include:

  • NRA’s rules for safe gun handling
  • rifle parts and operation
  • ammunition
  • shooting fundamentals
  • range rules
  • shooting from the bench rest, prone, sitting, standing and kneeling positions
  • Rifle cleaning
  • Continued opportunities for skill development
  • And more!

Details on the classroom and range location will be sent directly to the registered students. Students will receive the NRA Basics of Rifle Shooting handbook, take a written exam, and receive a course completion certificate. This course is also a mandatory prerequisite for th NRA Rile Instructor Certification, which we’ll be teaching the next day.

Students will need to bring:

  • a quality rifle/carbine
  • at least one magazine (if yours is a magazine-fed rifle)
  • eye protection and ear protection (provided by CSA, or you can use your own)
  • at least 50 rounds of ammunition in your rifle’s caliber (please contact us if you’re not sure)
  • anything you need to keep yourself comfortable in the elements (we’ll spend a few hours on an outdoor range)

A rifle sling is not required for this class, but if your rifle has one, that’s fine (it could come in handy).

If you don’t yet have a rifle, we might be able to lend you one of ours for this course, depending on availability; but we can’t guarantee that. And if you plan to continue on to the Rifle Instructor course, you should have your own gear). Students may also purchase ammunition from us if necessary. Feel free to contact us for questions about equipment requirements, and please let us know in well advance (preferably at least a week before class) if you will need to borrow equipment or purchase ammo.

The NRA Basic Rifle course lasts a full day (roughly eight hours), including the classroom lessons and the portion of class that we’ll spend on the range for live-fire drills.

Both the classroom portion and the live fire training will take place at Mountain Top Gun and Archery, 11564 Harrison Ferry Rd, McMinnville, TN 37110.

NRA Basic Rifle is great for new shooters (including those who have never fired a rifle). It’s also a good fit for folks who are used to a different platform (like pistol or shotgun) and even for more experienced rifle shooters who are self-taught or who would like a tune-up on the fundamentals. It’s also a mandatory prerequisite for anyone aspiring to one day be certified as an NRA Rifle Instructor.

We look forward to seeing you in class! If you have any trouble with the embedded registration form below, you can also register directly on our Eventbrite page (click here). Thanks!
